Antibiotic resistance challenge - schools competition

The Department of Health Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-associated Infections (ARHAI) in collaboration with the Department of Health is holding a national ‘myth busting’ Antibiotic Awareness Day Campaign on 18th November 2008. This is to coincide with the European campaign taking place in all member states on the same day as part of the ECDC European Antibiotic day. In the UK ARHAI with agreement from DH is organising a conference on the day in London .

As part of the publicity and to raise the profile of the activities on the day and to increase general awareness among the public, they have organised a schools poster competition. The aim of the poster is to increase understanding of antibiotics and why they shouldn’t be used inappropriately, the Chief Medical Officer from the Department of Health is inviting young science students in England to design an eye-catching A4 poster based on one or more of the following key themes:

  • To encourage family and friends not to go to their GP for antibiotics for coughs and colds;
  • To explain to the public when antibiotics should and should not be used; and
  •  To highlight the risks of antimicrobial resistance and creation of “superbugs” that may arise from imprudent use of antibiotics.
