Microbiology is a popular option for practical work at both primary
and secondary levels. It also offers scope for the quantitative
project work which examing bodies now demand, including data logging.
Teachers can be put off using microbiological investigations because
of worries about safety, but reassurance is available from MISAC
and SGM on all safety issues. They can also provide information
on where to find resources, including cultures, and offer many suggestions
for suitable and safe investigations.
Enquiries from 16+ students carrying out microbiology projects are
also welcome.
SGM sponsors and organizes training courses for primary and secondary
school teachers and technicians. Tailored to curriculum needs, the
secondary courses offer
basic training in the microbiological techniques needed for carrying
out interesting microbiology investigations safely in schools. The
courses for primary school
teachers show teachers how to deliver safe and fun workshops
on microbiology which require no laboratory facilities or complicated
equipment.
